Fashion for 2001

Fashion once again finds inspiration in the extravagance of the 1980's. Stiletto heels, micro-minis and lots of gold flashed from the spring catwalks in an optimistic reflection of the state of the economy. And the sheer joy of dressing up is witnessed in the variety of styles. This is such a great time in fashion, every one is having so much fun with the 80's revival. It's about bringing back the look with a new angle. The most important look is the skin and the silky, healthy hair. This look is about clean skin, and this is reflective of how far the skincare industry has come and its influence on fashion.

Hair 2001

The big power suits of the 80's demanded big, powerful hair, much of it inspired by the rock stars of the time. And while rock-n-roll definitely has its hand in this season's hair, styles take a softer, more sophisticated line to convey the more amicable anarchy that marks our new millennium. The looks of what we're seeing is what I call 'bed-head' or "shattered" look. The good thing is you get a lot of volume. We're definitely getting away from the square bob. It will be more rounded and curved around the face, with no more blunt lines. Bi-level, shoulder-length hair is also back. This is where the front of the hair can be cut off completely square, and doesn't blend into the rest of the cut. The shag is back, it's long and shaggy. The shorter cuts are 80's without the hard edge; they're cutesy, kicky and punky. Bangs are very short with hair longer on the sides and short in the crown for texture. You'll see more geometrics in cuts, and curls coming back in all sizes.

Try---Trendline to create curls with smoothness and no frizz. Layer product over product to create glossy, silky powerful hair, without stiffness or flakes. Style any style you want!!!

Color 2001

The trend in hair color is going back to solid panels of color complementing your skin and eyes. Highlights are still in demand, but no longer the fine highlights all over the head. The beautiful colors will be placed more solid and bolder, to create a richer stronger color. Brilliant beautiful reds are a great color this season. We now offer NEW red colors that Goldwell has introduced. It's time to have fun, try a new cut, color and makeover at Bellezza. Sunday April 1, 2001 we attended a Goldwell Hair Show at the Egg in Albany. They premiered new colors of red, shown on an array of brunettes; the colors are fabulous! Gorgeous blondes!! Beautiful shine!! Need I say more?

Men 2001

The Rod Stewart haircut is coming back for men. It's very 80's with the spiked crown. Men's hair is getting longer, not quite the 60's hippie look, but just below the collar. Hair color is more popular than ever, grey blending is very strong in the salon.

Sports Massage

The purpose of sports massage, also known as performance massage, is to reduce or eliminate factors that interfere with human performance. What sets sports massage apart from other modalities is its emphasis on the prevention of injury.

Sports massage works by loosening and invigorating you both physically and mentally so that you have the best chance of reaching your performance potential. You don't have to be a professional athlete. Any healthy individual engaging in strenuous activity is a good candidate for sports massage. If optimum performance, prevention of injury, and restoring yourself when you have completed a strenuous event are among your goals, then sports massage has a place in your life. The sports massage you receive should be tailored to your physical condition and the nature of your activity.

Massage Therapy Reduces Migraine Headaches

A recent study shows that massage therapy lessens the symptoms associated with migraine headaches, including pain and sleep disturbances; and increases serotonin levels.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, and researchers from the University of Central Florida.

Twenty-six adults who had experienced chronic headaches for at least six months were assigned to either a control group, which received no treatment; or to a group that received two 30-minute massage sessions per week for five consecutive weeks. Study participants did not alter their intake of any medication.

According to results in Intern LJ. Neuroscience (1998, Vol 96, pp. 1-11), control-group participants were told that they would receive massage therapy after a five-week waiting period. For that same five-week period, massage-group participants received a 10-minute massage routine that was repeated three times per session for a total of 30 minutes per session.

Subjects in the massaged group lay supine while the therapist applied pressure, circular friction and kneading to the muscles on the back of the neck, followed by "1) two-fingered, semicircular stroking to the base of the skull; 2) palpating under the base of the skull; 3) head and neck mobilization while using the thumb to apply compression to the sub-occipital fibers; and 4) steady, rhythmic pressure to the groove along the base of the skull," the published abstract stated.

Both groups filed out Medical and Headache Questionnaires both before and after the control or massage therapy sessions on the first day, and also on the last day of the study. The questionnaires asked for information on the type of headache pain subjects experienced, such as nagging vs. throbbing or stabbing; severity of headaches; frequency and duration of headaches (in days and hours, respectively); pain location; and other symptoms related to their headaches; such as vomiting or nausea, or aversion to light, noise or odor.

Participants in both groups rated their headache frequency and intensity; kept a sleep diary to log the number of hours they slept and the number of times they awoke during the night; and provided urine samples on the first and last days of the study to measure serotonin levels.

The massaged group reported decreased headache pain immediately following the first day's session. Participants in that group also reported, after five weeks' treatment, a lower Global Headache Score, meaning that they had more headache-free days and fewer days with mild headache pain. This group also reported sleeping more and waking up less often during the night, and lessened feelings of anxiety. The massaged group also showed an overall increase in serotonin (a vasoconstrictor) levels.

In contrast, the control group did not show significant changes in their Global Headache Scores, sleep patterns or serotonin levels. After five weeks, control group participants were offered complimentary massage.

According to he researchers, "The increased hours of sleep and fewer nightwakings noted for the massage therapy group could have resulted from fewer headaches or the decrease in headaches could result from improved sleep." Researchers concluded, based on other studies, that massage therapy was responsible for either the improved sleep or the immediately lessened headache pain.

Party Like It's 1983!!!!!

It's the return of the 80's! Long, square enhancements, opaque white nail polish, gold strips, gems and piercing. The look of the Material Girl, Madonna. Many of music's elite are following in her footsteps. The big trend is doing something 3-D with pizzazz and art and flair. As far as retro goes, in the 80's it was cheaply done; it didn't have much depth. Now the image is clean and classy. Pink shades range from Barbie to Fuchsia. This is HOTTER than ever especially when accented by opalescents like Jennifer Lopez' favorite from Creative Nail, a hot pink with opalescent undertones called Tutti Frutti!! Pink is fun and hip. Reds, corals, opaque lilac, glitter and sparkle are the new image. What a girl wants indeed. Bellezza is now offering Creative Nail polishes.

Tipping... Should I or Shouldn't I?

What is the appropriate tip for my stylist? To answer many of your questions , this is what we recommend.

If a stylist meets your expectations, a 18% tip.
If a stylist meets and exceeds your expectations 20% or more
If the receptionist is friendly and professional exceeding your expectations, $2.00-$5.00 tip.
The shampoo person...$1.00-$2.00.

"There are customers who have said that our shampoos are the best in the state."

If you have a discount of any kind, Clipper coupon, Prom special, Holiday special, tip for FULL value of service, not the discounted price.

When multiple services are received, the master stylist tips out of those who have assisted in completing the services. We suggest using the tip envelope or giving the tip directly to someone you want to receive a little extra for exceptional work.

For your convenience, there are tip envelopes at the front desk. Bellezza staff members rely on our tips for our individual supplies and for continued professional development. (Did you know a pair of good scissors costs between $200.00-$400.00?)
